What I’ve learned these last days
This last weekend i went snowboarding. And that’s why today i can’t really sit on a chair , as i have a huge and swallowed but (there’s nothing broken though, thankfully)… Because I’ve fallen quite badly of course. So, while laying in bed in agony last night, i was thinking about what I’ve learned from this experience… And you might ask what does a snowboard accident have in common with SEO and business in general? Well, you’ll see.
Promise less, deliver a lot more
There’s a basic rule in everything you do. Don’t get involved in things you can’t handle and promise to do things you’re not capable of. Why? Because that’s what I’ve done. Being kind of a beginner, I’ve tried to impress my friends by coming down a steep slope at full speed. But the board under me got out of control, so… Auch
That model should be applied in business too. Whenever a client comes to you, don’t promise him heaven on earth. Just say what you can offer him, and in the end try to give him something more. This way he will be over satisfied, living with the impression you gave him parts of your work for free. Of course, offering him too few things might make him go to your competitor, so there’s a very thin line here between failure and success.
Don’t get overconfident in your skills
Continuing the point from the previous paragraph, don’t get overconfident in your forces and try to evaluate what you can, and mainly what you can’t, do. Because this is the only way you’ll be able to reach your goals, in whatever action you undertake. Remember, it’s vital to know and accept your limits.
Safety measures fail most of the time
Yea, i have quite a few protection equipments while on the slopes. I’m like a little robocop, but that didn’t help me much when i lost control at high speed. Safety measures are a must, but once you’re way above your limits, they will surely fail. So, don’t rely on the safety measures you’ve taken, because you don’t know when they might fail. And most of the time this will happen in the worst possible moment.
Sometimes it’s good to get a punch in the stomach
It’s painful, it sure is, but it’s good. Why? Because it gets you with your feet on the ground. Me, i have to loose a 4 days exit at the end of the week as I’m supposed to be "passive" for between 2-4 weeks till i’ll be recovered. At least that’s what the doctor said. But in business, a major failure might be even more dangerous. Nothing spreads faster than bad notoriety. And nothing gets you closer to bankruptcy than it, too.
So, be careful. Maybe it will be better for you to learn from my mistakes and not translate them in your own actions, whether they are business moves or a backwards 360 down the kicker.
My first trip on the slopes snowboarding is very similar to yours, and the seo sadly was just as successful (thank goodness it was my own site!).
Another great lesson though, is continue experimenting and trying to learn. You will get the hang of it, and be in the black (money) or on the black (slopes) in no time!
