Ways for kids to make money

Posted by Mike on November 3rd, 2007

Back when i was younger i always looked for ways for kids to make money. Cause as a kid, you want all the things your see at your friends, and maybe what you’re getting from your parents ain’t enough to fulfill every desire. In order to help youngsters nowadays, i put together this list of easy ways for kids to make some extra cash, both working offline and online.

Ways for kids to make money Offline

There are lots of things you can do as a kid to make money. I’ll just point some of the most important and easy to do ideas.

Have a garage sell

You must have lots of things back home you don’t use anymore, like clothes, toys, books, electronics or even gadgets. Instead of letting them rot in a box in your basement, why don’t you have a garage sell? Ask you parents’ permission for this before, and try to convince them. In the worst case, even offer them a cut of the sale :P Plan you garage sale on a sunny Saturday. And print some flayers, then spread them around your neighbourhood, to make the buzz. If you’ll do this right, you’ll get lots of visitors to your sale and you’ll be able to make up to 500$ or even more.

On this same idea, if you happen to be skilled in some domain, you can make any kind of sale: cookies, doll clothes, wood and paper figurines, etc. Just use you imagination.

Offer to do house duties for a small fee

Your parents ask you to do all kind of stuff in and around the house. Well, how about if you can ask them for some small fees for that? They will be glad to get rid of your rumblings when asked to do something and you’ll end up with some cash. Some basic fees should look like these: window cleaning (10$), mowing the lawn (20$), dust cleaning around the house (5$), washing dishes (5$). And i’m sure you’ll find more…

Become an young entrepreneur

Together with your friends you could start your own little neighbourhood business. Here’s what you can do: walk pets, babysit (suitable for teenagers more than kids), mow lawns, help older people do their groceries, shovel snow during winter, clean houses, water gardens, wash cars, etc

And it won’t be hard to get started. Make a couple hundreds of flayers and spread them around: in your neighbours’ mail boxes, at the church, at the grocery stores. The fees will depend on each neighbourhood. And remember, if you’ll do a good work people will be satisfied, will call to your services again in the future and might even give you a big tip.

Offer Computer whiz-kid services

Kids these days already know a lot about computers and Internet. If you’re one of them, you could use this knowledge and earn a couple of money, by offering to tutor and teach others how to use their PCs, their programs, email or Internet. Also, you could offer to install software, perform scheduled maintenance, debug computers problems, etc. There are so many ways for kids to make money if they’re good in this area of expertise.

Ways for kids to make money Online

Get paid for your programming skills

Skilled in C, PHP, Pascal, HTML, CSS? Then maybe you should start making some money with you programming skills. Make small scripts, sites, forms, set up blogs for others, install plug-ins and scripts..

If you’re skilled in design, perhaps you should enter logos and templates contests. You can find lots of them on DP forum, and as you can see, people are paying good money for these services.

Start a blog and make money online

You could start a blog, you know… an online journal. Recently I ran into a SEO blog owned by an 11 years old kid. And his posts were pretty good. So, if you like to write and think you might have something interesting to say, start your own blog. Later on, you could start monetising it by selling ads, banners, etc. Who knows, you might become the next John Chow in a couple of years…

In the end, you can see, there are lots of ways for kids to make money, but all of them require work. Don’t get fooled by those stupid offers claiming you’ll win 1000$ per day in just a month. They’re just scam. Remember, hard work brings you good money. It’s that simple…

If you have any other ideas, please post a comment and I’ll add them in the list. So don’t be shy, I’m looking forward for your opinions.

  1. what else can i do?

  2. What about eBay because kids are so computer related they could use eBay ( with there parents permission and help.) Take some of the things they dont want or need and set up an account. I dont think its to complicated.

    Thanks for your other ideas!
