Starting a new blog - What’s your goal?

Posted by Mike on July 2nd, 2007

What's you goal? When you think about putting together a new blog, besides finding that sparkling idea, you should set your goals. They have to be clear on your mind, so that you’ll always try to reach them and struggle for it.

We’re going to divide the blogs in two categories: the non-profit ones and the business blogs, made in order to make some bucks (not talking about MFA-like sites :) ). Personal blogs are the leaders in the first one by far, and they have one goal: to express the owner’s feelings. Pretty simple here.

On the other hand… with the business-blogs, things are a little complicated. People tend to mark some unrealistic goals, like having the best blog ever made on a certain domain, or reaching Google’s first result in SERPs for a very competitive search. That’s not the right way to do it. It’s always way better to impose yourself smaller goals, like one of the followings:

  • reaching 100 unique users a day
  • reaching 100 RSS subscribers (that’s my favourite ;) )
  • earning 1$/day from AdSense and the other monetising systems (it’s important to know when to monetise your site)
  • reaching 100 unique users from Search engines each day
  • etc, etc, etc

Achieving goals
Achieving your goals would give your confidence a hell of a boost

You might say that only small people think small. Yea, maybe, but this way you won’t loose confidence and you won’t abandon your site. After you manage to reach your small goals, increase them. After reaching 100 uniques a day, the next step should be 500. And so on. Also, might be a good idea to estimate when you think you’ll reach every goal and compare the estimates with the real results, like this guy did here.

That’s it for today. See ya next time ;)
