Kindle Reader 2 – a smarter eBook reader from Amazon

A post written by Mike and published in Away from the PC

Amazon came up with a success story when they launched their first eBook reader, the Kindle. It was sold in many many copies all over the world and also helped selling more books than before.

It was a great gadget, although i personally liked the Sony Reader more back in 2007 as you might have read in the post about the Kindle reader vs theĀ  Sony Reader .

In the mean time, things evolved in the ebook readers world. And Amazon launched the new version of their device, the Kindle Reader 2. A new and improved one that tries to solve most of the complaints owners of the first Kindle had and one that should comfort most ebook readers users in the near future.

In the next lines we’ll explain why we believe the things said above.

First of all, the new Kindle 2 is slimmer and better looking. Actually, as you can see in the picture it will be slimmer than a pencil. So carrying it around won’t be at all a problem. It’s also lighter, weighting just 10.2 ounces. The body also is better built, with buttons and command placed more ergonomically.

Kindle Reader 2 has a 6″ screen with 600 x 800 px resolution and can display up to 16 shades of gray (only 4 shades for the first Kindle). It can now be easily used in direct sun light too. Storage capacity was increased to 2 GB , enough to hold around 1,500 books. Page turning is 20% faster and also, battery life seems to be up to 25% better (Amazon indicates an autonomy of between 4 days with Wi-fi on and 2 weeks under several circumstances). Lots of tiny improvements that do make a difference though.

Another great thing is that now, the Kindle 2 can use almost every type of text, audio and image document: TXT, DOC, PDF, PNG, JPG, MP3, HTML are just a few of the formats supported. Also, Amazon introduced a nice feature: Text-to-Speech, that can read out loud your books for you.

As for connectivity, Amazon Kindle 2 comes with Wi-Fi receiver. It also has the Amazon Whispernet technology that provides U.S wireless coverage via Sprint’s 3G high-speed data network, with no extra charge.

There are other smaller features too and if you want to find out more about them just click the big link on the bottom of this article.

I said nothing about the cons of this gadget. And that’s because i couldn’t really find any. All the things that I didn’t likes on the old Kindle are now gone or improved… All in one, the new Kindle 2 is better. The price tag hasn’t been increased though, as the new Kindle 2 Reader costs the same as its predecessor: $359 (now only $189).

  1. it’s easy to imagine the Kindle being combined with the functionality of a cell phone, PDA and mp3 player to make an all-in-one gadget

  2. It’s amazing once again that Amazon launches another version of Kindle Reader, It helps reader in a more comfortable way, the added text to read out loud feature is just a very easy way on understanding what they are reading. Thanks Kindle…

  3. Neat. I wonder how they will hold up against Netbooks though? Especially at that price.

  4. i doubt they can be compared…

  5. I have always had an interest in finding ways to not use so much paper. I quit taking the newpaper years ago when I was able to get all my news, local and nationwide online. This little device has green written all over it’s face. I can only imagine the eco-friendly devices, and solutions to our wastefull habits that are in store for us in the future.

I really go excited when I found out that free wireless connectivity is included in the price. You can browse Amazon’s kindle book store, and find your book and download it from any location where their wireless coverage is available. It seems that the wireless coverage should be pretty good, as Amazon’s whispernet they say is somehow linked in with Sprint’s 3G network. I know that sprint has really been beefing up their 3g network over the past few years, it, “publicly available wireless connectivity” is just one of the “big shifts” of the internet. So you know what this means for the kindle, and any other device using an available 3g network? No more looking for a wireless hotspot.

I have stacks of magazines that I have subscribed to, and now I find out you can subscribe to magazines, and newspapers. I am just now getting around to reading all the reviews on it.

    Thanks for the post
    Andrew
