Keywords researching tools and how to use them properly

Posted by Mike on October 11th, 2007

One of the most important aspects in the SEO business is knowing how to find the right keywords you’re focusing your site on. But of course this ain’t easy. Fortunately there are a couple of free tools that make our life a little easier. Here are the one i use.

SEO Book Keyword Suggestion Tool

It uses statistics from Google, Overture, Keyword Discovery and Wordtracker. All the data is condensed in an easy to read and intuitive table, so it’s pretty simple to understand. You can get an idea on monthly search volume for the keywords your looking for and a couple of variations, but there’s nothing about the competition.

Google Adwords

Google Adwords might be the most precise tool when you’re focusing on finding keywords that would get high SERPs positions in Google. There are two columns, Search Volume and Competition. The idea is to find a combination of words that has the highest number of searches with the lowest competition. Also, you won’t get an exact number of searches for the specific term, that’s why i advice you to combine this tool with the one above.

Gtrends Tool from Wordtracker

I particularly like this tool. It’s easy to use and has a couple of intelligent filters. You can see the amount of daily searches(i think at least) for a specific term, but you also have that little graph button at the end of each keywords line. By pressing it, you get another small chart, with competition and estimated number of clicks the first result in SERPs for that term will get daily. It might be good to get yourself an idea on specific keywords, but from my experience the results aren’t too conclusive.

Remember, these tools are mostly speculative, that’s why you should use them combined before deciding on the keywords you’re focusing your site on.

There are also some paid keywords research tools that are said to be great, but i didn’t have the chance to try them. If you did, or if you got other good free tools, feel free to share them with me. Thanks.
