Tips for Optimal AdSense Placement
Here’s a basic AdSense Placement guide that would ensure you get some good results with Google’s PPC program. There are some basic placement rules, but every site’s design counts a lot when planning how to arrange Adsense blocks on your site.
First of all, we have the Google AdSense Heat Map. Like you can see from the picture, the best regions where you can get you Ads are:
- Right at the beginning of your content (users come to your site for the content. That’s why they are most likely to check out the beginning of your article and might spot an interesting link there. On the other hand, an add in this position might drive traffic away. I for one, instantly exit those sites that stuff commercials right from the beginning.)
- Ads around your top and right sidebar menus or right at the end of the article. I too use this kind of placement here on MQ. The link unit right bellow my top menu seems to be the best one. An add unit right below your content might be a good solution too, as after people read your article, they might be interested in some more content on the same topic… And they might find something worth their time in those ads.
- Top level ads, left sidebar ads or right sidebar ads below the cut. These areas are mainly out of your visitors attention, as they focus on navigation and content. So, placing an add here might not be the best idea…
There are some tips they might help you with AdSense earnings:
- Use a tracking system to see exactly what are the parts of your site the readers click on. Here’s a very good article about tracking tools. Thus you will be able to place your ads in the areas on interest.
- Blend your ads with your site. It really depends a lot on how is your site built here, on your theme and on what colours you use. But here’s a very good example of AdSense blending (check out the last item in the list, just above the footer).
- You can try to match the fonts and links used on your site with the one Google uses in Ads. If you need the CSS styles, you might find them in this article.
- might be useful to use the standard blue colour for you links. People might get confused by bizarre colours, and most of them associate blue with a link. (haven’t tried this one, might be a myth, but.. is worth taken into consideration)
- Use the appropriate types of Ads for your sites. From my experience, the 336 x 280 rectangle, the160×600 wide skyscraper and the 728 x 15 link unit seem to be the best. But yet again, they really depend on each site’s structure.
In the end I have to point out a couple of things:
- don’t stuff ads on your sites and don’t create MFAs
- AdSense earnings depend a lot on eCPM. Some domains might get really low paying clicks, while other might get a couple of bucks from just one click. Law, insurance, banking, jewelry, these seem to be the best paying domains.
- don’t expect massive income from AdSense. Nowadays you have to be really smart/lucky/a cheater to make any money with Google. That’s why i would recommend using other monetizing methods.
- make sure your site/blog is ready for monetizing
