Importance of a Good Reputation
I had to present a project on the Management Course yesterday. It was a business plan on a tight niche were there were no competitors. And i got a surprising question from my teacher: "What if someone comes with a better offer somewhere in the future? What will keep you in business?". And my answer was simple: "Good reputation". And i think i was right.
Let’s bring reputation in the Internet marketers world. There are thousands if not tens of thousands of blogs and sites competing on this niche, but only a bunch of authority marketers. That because this domain is pretty complex and remarkably difficult to understand but also because those people started early, have lot of experience and a very good reputation. Shoemoney for example is known for his ability to be able to rank well for almost every term he wants, while John Chow is a guru on Making Money Online. That reputation is the one bringing them lots of lots of new readers everyday, thus increasing their notoriety.
I agree most of the Internet Marketing Blogs (actually, including this one) only scratch the surface of this vast area of expertise, but i doubt anyone would disclose their secrets and their best techniques. And even if you’re a big expert in search engine optimization and Internet marketing and you plan to open a blog were to post everything you know, you’ll be barking at the fence if you’re not notorious or you don’t get an initial boost from the authorities. Cause reputation is everything. Nobody listens or reads you if they don’t know who you are…
I’m not trying to tell it’s impossible to build another good blog about Internet marketing starting from scratch as long as you know what are you doing and you have something new to say. Just don’t expect to get anywhere near the Moguls in less than 5 years… Am i wrong? What do you think?

You are very right about your reputation being very important to you and your site. No matter what you are trying to accomplish on the web whether selling on a e-commerce site or being an authority blog your reputation can make or break you. In a day in a age where a quick Google search with a name will tell you more about a person than you really want to know, take good care of your reputation a lot rides on it!
Having low reputation won’t kill a blog since it can be built up slowly but it is not the same with demolished reputation. If your reputation is demolished online, you will not be given a second chance unless you have your name changed. This is why those who used their real names online gain more credibility from other Internet users.
Wayne, you might have a point there. I for one don’t blog under my full name, even though Michael is one of my middle names. And some other people told me that could be a mistake on the long round, as people tend to bound a lot more where there’s a lot of personal touch involved…
Its good to have a good reputation. Some of these guys really know what they are doing. I can make my blogs rank fairly well but not for competive terms.
