How to write a popular post every day?

Posted by Mike in Blogging on Wordpress on January 29th, 2008

Every now and then you manage to get those posts on your blog that are really successful. You just make the post, press publish, and a couple of hours later when you come back to check your stats, you notice a massive amount of links, comments and new visitors. That’s like wow! But, can you make this happen everyday? Well, i for one can’t.

Most of my popular stories are thought to be popular. And how can i define popular? Well, let’s see:

  • you get lots of direct visitors to the post
  • other people write about your post
  • you get mentioned on social networks like Digg, Stumble, Reddit, all of them bringing some additional traffic
  • on the long run, you get more subscribers and manage to rank well in SEs for some terms in that post

But, how can you make sure your post will get all of these? Well, you can’t. But at least you can try doing some of the things listed bellow, that will not bring you to certain success, but will ease the way to it. Because i believe there’s also some luck involved on the formula.

1. Give your best each day.  It’s simple. Try to make every post your best to date! Try to use your best idea and think about what your readers want to read. If you don’t  think the subject is good enough to make you read it on another site, then it’s not good enough for your blog either, as it won’t attract your readers’ attention.

2. Create something useful. Don’t blog just for the sake of blogging. Blog to communicate a message, to create something that your readers would need and would bookmark, and maybe will also pass to their friends.

3. Try to make your post keywords focused. Some of you might not agree with me here, but i do make some keywords research before i write some of my best posts. Why? Because I’m interested in traffic coming from search engines on the long run. Of course, keyword focusing depends on your niche. A blogging and SEO tips blog might not need it so much, but if you’re writing about cars, gadgets and stuff like this, proper research is a must.

4. Try to be unique. There’s no point in writing something everybody else has written about before. That’s why you have to try to create unique content. It’s hard of course, it requires that sparkling idea (that i kind of lack…), but if you offer the same content as the authorities, why would someone prefer reading you than them?

5. Use catchy title and headlines. A catchy title and headlines are a must in order to get attention. In RSS readers, Social bookmarking sites, search engines, etc etc, your post will have to be able to get noticed between hundreds of others. So, unless you title is good enough, nobody will click you link.

6. Give extra credit to your lead. Like titles and headlines, the lead is an aspect you should focus on. Since this is the first paragraph in your post, it should make the wondering internaut continue reading the post. There are a couple of basic rules here that should make you write a perfect lead: keep it short, catch attention and drive people into reading your post by telling them what is it about.

7. Use formatting to your best advantage. Paragraphs, lists, subtitles, images, these are all part of a good formatted post. Even if you have the best content, that would interest lots of people, nobody will read if it takes too much of an effort to do it. That’s why you should emphasize the best parts of your posts and use a clean and easy to read layout, with plenty of white spaces and images between the text.

8. Take your time in creating the post. When you finish writing your post, don’t just press publish. Read it again. If you don’t like parts of it write them again, if you think you did not made yourself understood be more thorough, if you’re not sure about what you’re saying do some more research. Writing a good post takes time for sure, but this times mean quality. And you readers will feel it in the end.

9. Link to other sites. Besides the SEO point of view, linking to other sites might get their attention to your site. Most of the bloggers out there will visit your site to see why you linked to them, and might read your post, subscribe to your feed or even link back from their site sometimes.

10. Use social networking to promote your post. Last but not least, there’s the social networking aspect of your post. Why do we use this? Because there’s no point in having a diamond egg if you keep it in the closet. People should find out about your post, so you have to tell them about it. Proper social marketing campaigns are the missing stone from the puzzle, that stone that can make the difference between an ordinary post and a great one.

Well, now that you know all of these tips, all it’s left is to put them in practice. Personally, I’m not expecting to write a great post everyday as i don’t have enough time to invest in blogging. And this can sometime be seen in the quality of my posts. Just don’t make the same mistake i do, allright? :)

  1. Thanks for all the helpful tips! I really enjoyed this post!

  2. I think writing popular posts are a little hit and miss. You don’t know what is going to be popular until you get the post published.

  3. I don’t think so. When you pick the subject you can “feel” if it’s going to be popular or not. Of course, not all the good articles get famous, but on the other hand, all the rubbish posts won’t get any attention, that’s for sure
