Free blog layouts - where to find free blog layouts?

Posted by Mike in Rummaging the WWW on February 29th, 2008

Blogging seems to be the Internet phenomenon of the beginning of the millennium. More and more people blog, whether they do it for fun or as a business. Thus, the need for themes and free blog layouts has grown huge. So, I’ve thought it would be a good idea to put together a collection of the best sources for this kinds of blog themes and layouts.

First though, we need to clear out something. Mainly, there are two types of blogging platforms (a content management system that allows you to put together your own blog in just a couple of simple steps): the independent platforms and the  hosted ones.

The main hosted platforms are Wordpress, Blogger, Facebook and Myspace, while from the independent ones, Wordpress is by far the most used, with others like Movable Type and Serendipity coming way behind (this article provides a thorough list of the Top 10 independent blogging platforms). Of course, all these blogging platforms are free. But let’s talk about the themes and layouts for each of the platforms, cause after all, that’s what the post should be about.

Wordpress free blog layouts (Shared + Independent)

Wordpress is mainly a shared platform, allowing you to make a blog like mike.wordpres.org by creating an account on their site: www.wordpress.org .  There are lots of limitations imposed, that’s why a web savvy user will go for the independent version of a Wordpress blog. He’ll need a hosting (here’s a great offer. You can use this code: MIKE84 , and get  2 extra FREE lifetime domain registrations that are well worth some bucks.) and then he’ll have to set up his blog. I agree, this process might be a little tricky for a less experienced user, but hey, you get in the end all the freedom you want.

Some of the best places to find free themes and layouts for Wordpress are the following:

  • The Official Wordpress themes - this is the free layouts section from Wordpress. You have quite a lot of themes to choose from, with various searching and displaying methods, so your quest for the perfect blog layout will be as simple as possible
  • Adsense ready themes - a list of the best Adsense optimized themes. Just add some quality content and start earning money via Google’s Ads system
  • SEOed Wordpress layouts - in order to get the so needed traffic from search engines you’ll need to know how to prepare your theme from the SEO point of view or maybe use one of the already tuned layouts from Courtney Tutle’s collection over here
  • Free Wordpress layouts - a good collection with some of the best Wordpress layouts out there. All of them for free, of course.
  • 980++ Wordpress themes - This list won’t be so easy to find, but I’ll give it to you anyway. A massive list of free blog layouts, that lacks a proper displaying though…
  • Top Wordpress layouts - again, a very useful collection with some professional looking themes you won’t find on every road. So just say thanks!

Blogger/Blogspot free themes (Shared)

Blogger, the blogging platform from Google, is only a shared one. So, you don’t get the flexibility of an independent blog, but it’s way easier for a noob to set up and manage his blog. And since the number of Blogspot users is pretty big worldwide, some good free layouts are a must:

Myspace blog layouts (Shared)

Being a huge success in the US, we’re not surprised Myspace allows it’s users to have their own little blogs now. As we are also not surprised that the Myspace Blogging platform offers less functions and freedom than the shared version of Wordpress and Blogger. But hey, who are we to say such things… Oh, as for the free layouts, you can get some good ones here:

That’s it for today. In a following post we’ll take a look at the best free blog layouts resources on the Web for Facebook, Movable Type and Serendipity. So, don’t forget to subscribe to RSS if you don’t want to miss any of the precious info to come.

  1. Mike - great post - but it would have been perfect if you could recommend some WordPress themes that are fully compatible with the latest release of WP - 2.3.3 ;)

  2. Hmmm, you have a point. I for one don’t have this problem as i always hardcode my themes so i never thought on this aspect… :) But thanks for pointing this out, I’ll try to see what i find out

  3. I have a collection of free blogger layouts if anyone is interested :)
