Copywriting tips you should know

Copywriting tips

I’m trying to study copy-writing and people behaviour analysis lately. I’ve read a lot of good articles and I’ve put on a piece of paper some of the ideas and tips the experts suggest to use when writing content for a site, an email or a landing page that are meant to sell some products.

I’m going to share with you some of them, and i hope you’ll add some more, so that we’ll create a large list of tips every copy-writing beginner should know:

  • Put together a list of  headlines and sub-headlines. You are going to use them to properly structure the content.
  • study your rival products and take a look at their user reviews. Make a list of pros and contras, and use them in order to offer your readers exactly what they want to hear (the pros), by distinguishing yourself from the bad points your competition has.
  • If your product was already bought by lots of people, put this information in a visible position on your page. Preferably close to the Buy button. Humans seem to suffer from the herd effect, and they will surely buy the products lots of other people have already bought.
  • After someone bought a product, take him to a tell a friend page. Offer him a bonus if he tells about your products to like 3 other persons. Statistically, this trick alone could bring you like 20% more traffic, so it would be foolish not to use it.
  • Take special care of the way you use people names in the reply emails you send them after he signed off for a purchase. Pretend you’re writing to a colleague. Don’t be overly familiar, don’t be offcolor, don’t mumble, don’t use any “corporate speak”. Just tell her/him why you’re writing and what do you have to offer, like in an everyday person to person discussion.
  • Study your competition and make a lists of phrases to use, phrases meant to catch people attention
  • Use real user reviews in your letter/page. That means not only the positive ones, but even one or two from peoples that were satisfied with your product, but would have wanted more. This way, these reviews would seem more real, thus their impact would be stronger on your visitors.
  • Don’t assume your visitors will read the whole letter/page no matter what. No, in the moment you even begin to bore them, they are out of there and they will never come back. Thus, a proper usage of headlines, eye catching phrases, colours, Bold-ed elements, graphics, etc should be use to keep them focused till the end, till they are trully convinced your product it the one they realy need.

That’s it from my part. Now let’s see, what can you add from your experience?

  1. Thanks for putting this together. It will be a great resource for beginners and others who need reinforcement from time to time.

My tip comes from something I read the other day:

The first paragraph is your chance to get them to read more so make sure it is interesting and appealing for those who are skimming.

This probably goes along with your last comment.

  2. Great info. I like what you have provided for the content on this post.

You need to make sure in your headlines that you have a benefit as well as an eye-catching phrase that causes interest. People buy from interest, but especially if they see a benefit with it.

  3. Thank you very. Tips you have given would be a great help to the beginners in advertising their products. Having an interesting site, gives a great impact to viewers.

  4. thanks for the kind words everyone
