The official Fedora 7 torrents have been released and you can find them right here: Fedora project mirrors. The distribution are available in several forms, like Live CDs with GNOME or KDE desktops or a DVD. All you have to do is download the .ISO files, burn them on your disks and start "the game".

Although Fedora was known for it’s massive innovations and improvements of the Linux distributions (It was the first one to use SELinux security system), nowadays, the new Fedora 7 has settled to be a complete distribution that can be easily used by beginners and advanced users too. Maybe that’s why the name "Fedora Core" has been dubbed for the plain "Fedora", the new distribution merging both the Fedora Core and Fedora Extras package, containing just free license released software.

Of course, some upgrades have been made to the back end, but the visible ones for every users are the new virtualization tools, desktops and language packs. In the end, Fedora 7 seems to be a moderate distribution of Linux, from the number of options available and their complexity, situated somewhere between Ubuntu (below) and Debian (above).

I haven’t got time to check out Fedora 7 myself, as i have many things on my head right now, but I’ll give it a try as soon as possible. Maybe I’ll put it on my portable WD Passport in order to have a bootable system in my pocket every time Till then, i found this well made review here, that might come in handy.

I’ve been planning to keep a log of my step to step experience with open source operating systems, so here it is. It’s about Ubuntu, and what I experienced during the process of learning how to use this Linux distribution. Why am i doing this? Cause i want to help other people that might encounter the same problems as i do. So let’s begin.

The Ubuntu Saga, part 1 – Why Ubuntu?

I’ve been in touch with computers for more than 10 years now but i was always a Microsoft’s fan. Windows is OK, from my point of view. From Win 95 till Vista, i’ve tried them all, and even though had lots of bugs and security problems, they served me well. For gaming, web surfing and any daily activities, Windows is OK. But when we’re talking about advanced computer programming, Linux allows you to make some things that Windows don’t.

So, that’s why i decided to learn to use Linux. In order to be able to pass my exams on the Advanced Communication Protocols i take in College this year. And i chose Ubuntu, from all the other distributions. Why? Let’s just see.

1. Ubuntu is free and was the most accessible for me at the time. Well, of course, most Linux variants are, but this one happened to lie on my desk at work one day. So, i gave it a try when i bought my laptop, as it came with only FreeDOS. Ubuntu can be loaded from the CD, without needing to be installed. I like that, as it was something Windows didn’t offer me before. And that’s how all started.

2. Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty was just launched those days and everyone was talking about it. So, i guess i wanted to know what was the big fuss about it

3. Ubuntu has a great and rapidly growing community. I thought this would come in handy for a newbie like me, and so it was. Found some great info here and here that really help me get started.

4. Ubuntu comes on only one CD and the producers claimed it would take no more then 25 minutes to install it. And since my time is precious..

Ubuntu, Linux for human beings

5. Ubuntu is one of the most user friendly Linux distribution, thus making it easier to use by beginners like me.

Other reasons could be easily found, but those are the one coming to my mind right now. That being said, my first story is over. Next time, you’ll find out how I installed Ubuntu for the first time. It will be an Ubuntu Installation Guide for beginners, so keep in touch.
