10 ways to increase your PageRank
First of all, what’s this PageRank everyone talks about? Pretty simple, it’s Google’s way of telling us how important a site is on the web. Many factors contribute to a site’s PR, Google’s algorithm being one of the best kept secrets in the world. Anyway, some of the most important criteria are the number and the quality of the backlink your site has. And what’s a backlink? A link pointing from other sites to an article on yours. And their quality is showed by their PageRank. So, the more links with high PR you get, the higher you PR will be.
Many people might wonder why would someone want to have an increased PR, as lately it lost almost its entire authority in the Google’s algorithm. That means that you won’t get better results in Google’s SERP if you have a higher PR. But, in order to get that high PR you need quality links and quality links help you get better placements. So, in the end, PR indirectly helps you perform better in Google. That’s why you have to get one as bigger as you can.
PageRank scales from 0 to 10, with 10 being the best. Every optimized site can get a 4 even from the first PR update, and even a 5 latter. From here on, the hard part starts. Going from 5 to 6 requires a lot of work and passing this margin is almost impossible unless you’re one of the most popular sites on the Internet. MySpace.co for example is a PR 7 site, Youtube.com a PR 8 one.
Finally, we got to the tips. What should you do in order to increase your PageRank?
- Concentrate on getting good quality link backs, that should come from sites that have related content with yours. That doesn’t mean a PR2 or PR3 link should be ignored. Just stay away from Bad Link Neighbourhoods and you should be alright. Also, try getting those links widely spread. Having lots of links pointing to your homepage and very few to the inner pages won’t do any good.
- Buy text links. In order to grow your PR really fast, try to buy some links on high PR sites, as they would help you a lot and it is known that it’s kind of hard to attract them for free. Unfortunately, buying a PR7+ link might cost you a couple of hundreds bucks every year, so don’t exaggerate. Fix yourself a budget for link buying each month and try to get the best of it.
- Exchange links with related content websites. The higher the incoming links will be the better, but most of the times you’ll get back a link as powerful as yours (with the same PR).
- Participate in Link exchange carnivals and Viral thingies. I joined one myself last month and i got like 10 backlinks from it. Pretty good for a new started blog.
- Use cross-site linking and link to your old post. This will help you increase your PR, your search engine positioning but also will revive the old content, that current readers might still find interesting.
- Create a website network. This only works if you already have some established sites. By posting a direct link there to your new site, the last one will earn a couple of quality links that will help it a lot.
- Use socializing services, like Myspace, StumbleUpon, Digg, Reddit, Fark etc. These sites ussualy have a high PR, and links coming from them are useful. They also lure in lots of visitors that might return if they like your content.
- Comment on Blogs. Many Blogs now use the Do-Follow plugin so a comment on them will get you a good backlink. The more comments you post the more links you earn, but be careful, DON’T SPAM.
- Participate in Forums and Discussion Groups. Most forums and discussion groups allow you to post a live link to whatever you want. In order to prevent spammers, most forums require to have a certain amount of posts before allowing you to do that, but it shouldn’t be too hard to aquire them.
- Finally, but not last, get yourself a nice site and some unique and well written content. The idea and the quality of the content on a site are a gold mine, as good content will act as a link bait and will attract incoming links without any effort from you. Just write interesting stuff and see your site growing.
Thus being said, i’m looking forward for the next PR update, scheduled later this month. I figure I’ll get at least PR3 in the worst case, but probably a PR4. Not more but it’s a start. What do you think this Google PR update has in its bag for you?

Excellent and very thorough article Mike. You’ve covered all the bases for webmsters looking to increase their PageRank. For me, the social networking is the most important because you’re not only building backlinks, you’re building friendships which translates into more readers for your blog or visitors to your site.
I’m glad I stumbled across your blog, added you to my blogroll.
10x Dave. You’re right, social marketing has many aspects. I’m going to treat the subject in a following article soon so stay tuned
Good advice, Mike!
Tip #3 shouldn’t to be underestimated. My wife’s Russian Adoption Journal blog is only a few months old yet it gets nearly as much traffic as our main blog that’s been going for more than 3 years. And this is spite of its fairly narrow topic niche. The international adoption blogger community is a very close-knit and supportive group – a force to be reckoned with, for sure!
Tip #9 can also be a biggie, especially if you run a “niche” blog. Adding your website URL to your signature that’s used in forums or message boards, along with “deep linking” (posting messages that contain links referencing older blog entries), can be a significant way to draw new visitors – and those folks may be much more likely to convert to readers (subscribers) than visitors who found you by way of social sites like StumbleUpon or random Google searches.
For example, as a result of messages posted over on the NewBeetle.org about my wife’s car (“Caliente”), we get quite a number of visitors from that group that I’m certain we’d never get otherwise.
Hey Mike, I am very interested into see the results as well and see if anything that I have done will do any good for me.
